Travel advices and warnings Vilnius
Souvenir The most popular souvenir is Baltic amber, available in outlets such as Amber, Ausros Vartu 9, and the Amber Museum-Gallery, Mykolo 8.
Food and drink Not surprisingly one of the many specialities in Vilnius is bigos. Bigos is a traditional stew typical for the Lithuanian cuisine that reminds of the German Sauerkraut although typically richer, less sour, and differently seasoned. The recipes vary considerably from region to region and family to family. Ingredients include fresh and fermented white cabbage, tomatoes, different cuts of meat and sausages, honey and even mushrooms. The meats may include ham, bacon, beef and veal. Bigos is usually eaten with bread and potatoes, often come with vodka or dry white wine; many though prefer the dish with chilly cooled local beer. If you have had bigos in Poland or elsewhere, it’s a must to try the Lithuanian one in Vilnius, I guarantee it will taste different from that of other countries.
Tourism When thinking of Vilnius it’s not quantity but quality that come to ones mind. This City has besides its historical surroundings a rhythm of culture no to be experienced many places elsewhere. Approximately more than 1, 000, 000 tourists visited Vilnius last year and that for a good reason.
Several festivities and happenings are taking place here every year, a lot of them quite unique. This charming city is still not over exploited meaning there are still many opportunities to exceptional experiences.
Cultura Vilnius is a culture city. Many artists live and work here; many varied culture institutions offer a chance to see traditional art or listen to the music of the local and guest performers. There are a lot of museums in the Old Town with interesting original and quality displays. Vilnius history and culture dates from the Stone Age to the present, which you will meet in the Lithuanian National Museum. The remains of a portion of the 16th century fortification is also a museum - Artillery Bastion, which tells about the colorful history of the town and about the city's defense system. The branches of the Lithuanian Art Museum have been established in former nobles' palaces, so they are always attractive and interesting. Some of the museums in Vilnius display exhibit not only from Lithuania but foreign countries as well. After the opening of the large Baroque applied art and paintings exhibitions, Vilnius Picture Gallery of the Lithuanian Art Museum feature Baroque music concerts that totally restore old time's atmosphere.
Shopping Whilst Vilnius is not exactly Milan or London, it does offer infinitely more opportunities for retail therapy than it did during the Soviet years. Although Vilnius has followed the trend for big shopping malls such as Europa, Konstitucijos 7a, and Akropolis, Ozo 25, the Old Town is also home to a pleasing myriad of small-scale niche shops. Some of the most interesting include the Cognac Boutique, Etmonu 4, with its world-class treasure trove of fine cognacs, Antikvaras, Pilies 32-4, with its array of bric-a-brac and antiques, and Yzzy Fashion House, Gaono 10, with its interesting and offbeat attire.
Cost Vilnius has an overall cost of living index which equates it with middle cost of living locations. The overall cost of living index is comprised of the prices for defined quantities of the same goods and services across all 13 Basket Groups. Vilnius is currently ranked 152 overall, most expensive place in the world for expatriates to live, out of 300 international locations.
