But remember, not all of them are right in the absolute centre - some of the most wonderful gems can be found near the outskirts or even outside of Milan. Мила́н (Milano, Milan, Mediolanum — «в центре равнины») — главный город северной части Италии, административный центр области Ломбардия, самого крупного региона Италии. Город является столицей региона и финансово-экономической столицей Италии.

Много веков город носил имя Майлянд, которое и сейчас является немецким названием города.

Милан расположен в западной части Ломбардии.

Сам город (как закреплённая административная единица — коммуна) занимает площадь 182 км², в нём проживает около 1, 3 млн человек.

Городской округ Милана («Большой Милан») выходит далеко за пределы коммуны (более всего на севере и на востоке), занимает площадь 1 982 км² и имеет население 3 707 210 (согласно переписи 2001); в 1991 население было 3 738 685.

Область включает 188 коммун. Население коммуны уменьшилось на 113 084 жителей (8, 3 %) с 1991 по 2001 года. Нынешний мэр Милана — Джулиано Пизапия (с 1 июня 2011 г.)
