Shopping The shopping in St. Petersburg has never been better and you can usually find almost everything that you could possible need simply along the Nevsky Prospekt. There are also countless kiosks, which line the underground stretch between the Nevsky Prospekt and the Sadovaya Ulitsa, where cheap CDs and DVDs are sold.
Many traditional Russian handicrafts can be purchased all over the city, such as the famous stacking Russian dolls (matryoshka), and either credit cards or Russian rubles are accepted - strictly no other currencies. However, if you are looking for more Western-style shopping in St. Petersburg, then a number of good shopping malls are found around the Sennaya Ploshchad and also the Vladimirsky Prospekt.
Sights A city of palaces and museums, broad avenues and winding canals, St. Petersburg's short history has endowed the city with a wealth of architectural and artistic treasures. Alongside world-famous attractions such as the Hermitage, St. Isaac's Cathedral and the Mariinsky Theatre, the city has scores of lesser known but equally fascinating sights that reveal both the pomp and extravagance of St. Petersburg's political and Imperial past, and also the mysterious, tragic genius that has touched so many of the city's great artists and writers. Still considered Russia's cultural capital, St. Petersburg reflects the country's extraordinary fate like no other city, and its uniquely rich atmosphere exerts a powerful grip on even the most jaded traveler.
Cost The subject about the cost of living in St. Petersburg Russia also highlights that Russians no longer survive on just pickled cucumbers, beetroots and a vat of vodka - although the latter is arguably still true!
As more and more Russians in St. Petersburg experience a form of disposable income so the range and quality of products available continues to increase.
The trend towards commuting to large supermarkets on the city outskirts has certainly taken off over the past few years – mainly due to the growth in vehicle ownership.
These larger outlets obviously buy in huge bulk and maintain more competitive prices than their smaller city centre counterparts. The prices, in Russian roubles/rubles, featured in our (changing) shopping list below are only to be looked upon as a guideline. .
