Awesome open air museum. Unfortunately, I came in the offseason so none of the building were open but they were still interesting to read about and walk around. The boat exhibit was awesome too

This was such a pleasant surprise. We spotted some old boats and decided to check it out. We found beautiful museum that featured number of Norwegian boats that we could see and explore, than number of traditional homes that were just fun to explore with my three kids. We were lucky that on the day we visited museum had a boat tour on a viking boat to Alesund. Kids loved it. Unlike in US they were free to move about the boat and they were even given a chance to stir it for a while. On the way back we checked out a section of museum that talked about local industries over the centuries and related those to scientific discoveries.

This is the coolest outdoor museum that I have been to in Norway. Many of the historic houses and buildings are open to be visited with multilingual explanations printed on laminate paper inside. The signs indicating the name and age of the building were made of wood so to not stand out and ruin the effect of the building. One of the houses was in use from the 1600s until 1933 and across from it, another house had delicious raspberries growing on the roof. The exhibits inside the centre were very informative and well written and the boats houses in the buildings near to entrance and in the water are very cool to see. Definitely set aside a good few hours in your trip to Ålesund to visit this museum.

Good museum. The viking ship area were closed when we went there, but we got the tour for 4 people free of charge.

Coming from London, albeit not quite what I'm used to as a museum, Sunnmore Museum was very interesting and pleasantly laid out. Covering a large area of land, from the village put together out of old wooden houses with authentic grass covered roofs, to viking ships and numerous historic boats, it's provides a few hours well spent. Some information signs were missing their English translations, and some displays were unfinished, but it's clearly a continuous work in progress and it's looking good. Also, you can actually touch items here....something which is now just a distant memory in many historical places around the world, as the obvious need to preserve becomes increasingly important as more and more people travel.
