Nice historical site. Great place for pictures. However, with no guides one cannot learn much as you pretty much figure your way on your own. Also all the writings and information are in Portuguese 😶

The old fort built by the Portuguese in mid 19th century near the site of an earlier fort. The small museum has the remnants of early Portuguese era. The Coffin of last ruler of the famed kingdom of Gaza, Ngungunhane's preserved, carved wooden coffin is on displayed here.

....These were very nostalgic moments for us to be walking down the streets of Downtown Maputo after an absence of 24 years! Also what was very satisfactory was the fact that we were on a Guided Walking Tour! The Fortaleza is very well kept, clean and very tidy, everything was explained to us which made it very pleasant and interesting to hear and see some of the Statues that are still preserved which by right makes up the history of this country despite the past and deserves a rightful place in the Museums of Maputo(Mozambique) Its sad to see that not very much has change with regard to the modernization of the once beautiful and sort after city and yet it is true that there are a few modern new buildings coming up! Progress seems to be far too slow! One Very disappointing Fact is that in Most Public Places you are still restricted from taking Photo especially in the Market Places and Some Buildings!! Nevertheless Maputo remains a Beautiful Historic Country that Must be visited by all who can..........
