Soane a bricklayer`s son who rose to be architect of the Bank of England, gradually bought up three adjoining Georgian properties, altering them to serve not only as a home and office, but also as a place to store his collection of art and antiquities. His home remains the best example of what he dubbed his `poetry of architecture`, using mirrors, domes and skylights to create wonderful spatial ambiguities. Located - North side of the Lincoln`s Inn Fields, Holborn.
