The room (private double room) contained litter when I arrived.
There was a repeating banging sound coming from the plumbing and the shower temperature was dangerously unreliable - searing hot with almost no notice.
There were no shutters/blinds on the bathroom window.
Staff entered my *locked* room uninvited a little after midnight of the first night of my stay (immediately left once they realised the room was occupied - without explanation of why they entered in the first place).

I'd say the only upsides are the low price and convenient location. That said, I certainly will not be returning.

Stayed two nights at Hatters. Really enjoyed the location, quick walk from the station. Has been very tidy the last few visits. Very good value.

Very friendly staff. Nice and chatty. The room i had was a sleeper, interesting. Probably not the best option if you want a bit of privacy as the open plan layout means more noise in the morning. Other than that very clean as were the shower rooms and toilets. My only suggestion would be for better, brighter lighting in the shower room, its a bit too dim and warm, not ideal for putting on makeup.

i think it would have been really nice in the summer. it has a nice fit out and location within city but i don't think the staff enjoy working there. someone told me that in offpeak season they (not sure if it's a requirement) let their spare beds to 'people that need them' the first night i stayed i (20 yo female travelling alone) was in a room with 4 other males (looked) older than 65 one was super weird and i felt very unsafe. i woke up at 3am to find him inches away from my facing attaching glow sticks to my bed then he kissed me on the cheek. i really tried to find the positive in staying here but couldn't.

Stayed at Hatters during an induction week at the University of Birmingham and loved it! Fantastic impression from the moment I walked in the door; the front lounge had a great style and I was greeted by friendly staff who were very helpful and knowledgeable. The room was clean, tidy and pleasant and the bed was very comfortable. There were also secure locker storage in my room which I used with a padlock I rented from reception for only £2. The en-suite toilet and shower room was clean and well looked after as well as having more than enough space for any conceivable person to get changed. The self-service kitchen facilities were clean and had plenty of cooking utensils; know that there isn't an oven which caught me out when I came back with a frozen pizza! The complimentary breakfast included tea, coffee, juice, cereal and ingredients to make sandwiches or toast and was lovely. I genuinely really enjoyed my stay at the hostel and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a place to stay that offers much more than what you pay for!

Thanks again, Hatters!
