Where do I start….
About 4 months ago I was looking into trying my daughter in a new sport. She has tried swimming, gymnastics and dance and I wanted to expose her to something different. I found Guelph Family Martial Arts on their webpage and I was immediately impressed with the Knee High Ninja Program and all the benefits martial arts has for a child’s development, focus and success in life and at school. When I stepped into the dojo that day with my daughter I didn’t know what to expect. I was blown away and I have never looked back. I didn’t know who Sophie or Nathan Skoufis were at first, but I certainly know now. It’s not just their immense wealth of knowledge and skill level, trophy upon trophy lining the walls, it’s the feeling you get when you go. You are a part of something, part of a family and part of a community. They are two of the most kind, genuine, modest and sincere people I know and I am honored to know them and to learn from them.
I have been involved in many sports as a child and have experienced good and bad coaches. Sensei Nathan is among the best I have seen. He has a genuine love and passion for what he does and it shows in the way he teaches. He keeps the kids engaged, listening and learning all while they are having fun. He is incredibly patient and has a natural ability for teaching and connecting with kids. My daughter loves going to karate and talks about it daily which speaks volumes. Since starting with GFMA her behaviour at home and at school has significantly improved. I feel she will be very well prepared to deal with life’s challenges as she grows up with the skills, both physical and mental, that she is learning from martial arts.
Shortly after she started, I joined kickboxing. It has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. I feel challenged each class, every day is something different, I am learning new skills and having fun with a great group of people. It’s something I look forward to each day, so much so, that I cancelled my gym membership and I will be starting karate as well. I chose to do this for myself, but it is also something I can do with my daughter and there really is no better place to be than at Guelph Family Martial Arts.
Thank you to both Nathan and Sophie for taking such good care of my daughter and of me. You have both made such a positive impact in my life and I am so glad to have met you.

GFMA is like my second family. I first started doing cardio kickboxing in January 2017, which was the best decision of my life. I'm in the best shape I have ever been and still improving week by week. It's always something different every time I go, which is almost every night, and I learn something new each time. Nathan is so knowledgeable and creative, his techniques are by far the best I've ever come across, if I'm doing something incorrectly he'll help me do it the right way so I'm getting all the benefits of the workout and avoid hurting myself. One of the greatest parts about the kickboxing classes is that there's a sense of community every night, everyone who shows up is always so friendly and it really makes it a fun and comfortable environment.

In March 2017 I started karate classes. It really makes a difference learning from Mr. Nathan who's a 10x world champion and a 5th degree black belt, not many people can say they've been taught by someone with such amazing talents and knowledge. I can't express how much I've learned the past few months, not just about tae kwon doe and karate, but about mental strength and my own abilities. It's a very rewarding feeling to be able to see yourself grow into the best person you can be. Also learning to be able to defend myself as a young woman has made me feel so much safer and confident. I couldn't have asked for better senseis.

Mr. Nathan and Mrs. Sophie are the two most hardworking and caring instructors.. and people. They are so dedicated in making their dojo the best there is, I can't say any dojo could even come close to how amazing GFMA is. They care so much about their students, they really do treat everyone as if they're family. I love Guelph Family Martial Arts, and attending their classes every day really makes my life much more fulfilling. Thank you GFMA!

Just started up into the kick boxing program, and could not be more impressed. Learning lots while working out in a fun environment.. doesn't feel like a drag when i go to the "gym" now. Great place to get in shape, meet some great people and learn some new skills. Thanks for all the extra training to nathan, keep up the great work!

If I had to describe GFMA in one word, I would have to use the term dedication. Dedication in the way they treat their students, dedication in the way they go above and beyond and the extra mile to provide for their students. The instructors are dedicated, helpful, friendly, accommodating and influential. Not to mention the amount of dedication and time they have put in the sport themselves, 15+ years! Which resulted in attaining achievements only one could dream of. It’s also an opportunity to be part of an amazing group of people that will inspire, motivate and support you in whatever endeavor you pursue. The staff and members alike all foster a strong sense of community that makes it feel like a family.
