Bright and modern while still being cosy and full of old charm. Service is quick, food is good and it has a lovely welcoming atmosphere

Gastropub restaurants are a dime a dozen, but the Strathmore isn't even worth a penny. While it is not overpriced by the standards, it's hard to find them at the Strathmore.
To be fair, online booking was easy and the couple offer sounded enticing.
The trouble started when we arrived. There was a birthday function and it was awfully loud. This comes with the territory, but maybe the comfort of the other guests should be taken into consideration when offering functions.
Staff seemed friendly and fast at first. Despite the birthday party, our starters arrived shortly after ordering them. However, the quality of food left much to be desired. The tiny king prawns felt reheated at best, no chili anywhere. The smoked salmon was alright, although probably not prepared at the restaurant. The sauce was good except for the barbecue sauce in it.
On to the mains. Probably the last time we ordered sirloin steak offered for £15. It came grey, as if it was boiled. More oil than anything. We ordered medium rare, but there was no pink anywhere. The burger was equally disappointing. You don't wow anyone anymore by putting dry patties between a brioche bun.
The grand finale was when we tried to pay. When we asked to pay, we were informed that the card machine had not been working but they were "fixing it for three hours" and the waitress wanted to check if it was working again. This can happen, of course, but inform guests at the beginning and not when they want to pay. 15 minutes later, I decided to enqiure. Card payments were still not possible. Not a single "sorry", instead I was given two options. The card machine across the street which charges 1.95 or to give them my card details. Ridiculous. Never again.

Welcoming and much more spacious than you'd think. Plenty space for for buggies during the day. In colder weather there is a stove. In warm weather there's a beer garden.
Serves food, alcohol, hot drinks.
Decent toilets.
